I finally got my disks and raid card and got them installed. Unfortunately I made the very dump mistake of going cheap on the SATA card. I puchased a highpoint RAID card, which really doesn’t do real RAID. It does some sort of fake raid or software raid. Needless to say Openfiler didn’t like this very much. I almost switched to Freenas as an alternative, but I still had the same problems with the Highpoint card.
In the end I decided to send back the Highpoint card and just setup software raid on Openfiler. I am fairly confident this will give me what I want right now and provide some room to grow.
I did find one caveat on the Software Raid and that was that the Partitions for the software raid must be the same size. If they aren’t then it will not work correctly and setup the array.
Right now the performance is great and everything is backing up and working correctly. I am also using it as storage for my vmware testing and setting up different servers on there.
