So, what does this message actually mean though. Is it safe to delete the file? The file that gives us this message is called sys.dat which sounds pretty important to delete.

iSCSI isn't bad. But you need a usecase for it. If you need MB/s, you will get much more performance with FC, FC is much more efficient then iSCSI. 98,5% of a FC frame is data, not overhead. With iSCSI you will get maybe up to 60 or 70% usable bandwidth for data. 10 GbE is nice, but 8 GB is faster. Sure, FC isn't a cheap technology, but it's not an option to choose such an important infrastructure (storage) by price. You should choose the technology because it's the right technology for you company, for your needs and for you budget. Some of my customers are running FC and iSCSI. Depending on the needs, they deploy FC, iSCSI or NFS/ CIFS to there internal customers.

Robinson - thanks for the feedback! Per my email to you, I think you'll want to check your configuration - Failover Manager intervenes much more rapidly than 43 seconds - it is much closer to instantaneous than that. I suspect your test systems are strapped for memory. Put the Failover Manager on any system capable of running VMware Player or another ESX host - you definitely don't want it on the same system(s) as the VSA...

Best regards,
Stephan

OK, test is done. Everything worked like a charm. On a busy network, it took 43 seconds to do the failover, the machines that have the LUN presented went to 100% IOWAIT during that time.

After that, everything regained consistency. No data loss, no lost transactions, just a small "freeze" of ~40 seconds. My client is impressed with the result.

The main concern is still the lack of automated Virtual Manager startup on the surviving node, so they can deploy two machines without requiring a third virtual machine to regain quorum.

My next lab will be a VMware cluster without storage but with HA.

Thanks again for all your help.
